Kitesurfing – adrenaline on the waves and in the air
Kitesurfing is a young, dynamically developing sport. In the late 1990s, it was practiced by only a few dozen people, but now the membership base of kitesurfers is in the tens of thousands. And what is important for this adrenaline sport, interest in it is constantly growing.
History and development of kitesurfing
The principle of kitesurfing, or kiteboarding, as the sport is also called, consists of riding on the water on a kiteboard using a so-called towable kite. Kitesurfing is one of the branches of powerkiting, a sports activity in which a towable kite is used to move a person on land, snow or water. The principle of towing a kite was tested as early as the 13th century in ancient China. However, further experiments that led to the improvement of the design of towable kites were not recorded until several centuries later. The Legaignoux brothers' design brought about a revolution. Their kite was called Wipika and, thanks to specially shaped inflatable chambers and anchoring of the lines, it made it much easier to launch the kite from the water. Legaignoux also signed the Bow kite concept, which is popular with most manufacturers.
Disciplines
Soon after its inception, kitesurfing was divided into several disciplines. Freestyle, which involves performing tricks in the air, is particularly popular. Freestyle itself is further divided into Unhooked, Wakestyle and Hangtime, which measures the time spent in the air. Since 2007, the record has been held by Jesse Richman, who flew through the air for a full 22 seconds.
Another discipline promises an attractive spectacle – Wave riding. In this discipline, you ride on several-meter waves in dangerous proximity to the breaking crest of the wave. In addition to these disciplines, Speed riding is also attractive, which usually involves an average speed over a 500-meter section.
